Home Care Services

WorkSafeBC has a formal agreement with a network of home care providers to treat injured workers. When an injured worker's claim is accepted, we may pay for Home Care Services required to help him/her recover from compensable injury. Please note: services must be pre-approved by a WorkSafeBC officer before we will pay for them.

WorkSafeBC is charged with the administration of the Workers Compensation Act R.S.B.C. 1996 c. 492 as amended, under which we have authority to provide health care and rehabilitation services to workers who sustain injuries arising out of and in the course of their employment. In exercising that authority, a series of varied programs and services (called Board Sponsored Rehabilitation Services) have been established to meet injured-worker and referral-source needs, and help injured workers recover from injury and return to work in a safe and timely manner.

WorkSafeBC has an existing provider network for Home Care Services. The network, established July 1, 2011, will terminate June 30, 2016.

Description of Services

Home Care Services are designed to help injured workers gain, maintain, and improve the self-care skills that allow them to live, participate, and work in their local community. A Home Care Service provider may provide service in the injured worker’s home and/or community setting to assist in acquiring, retaining, and improving independence. Services will address physical and psychological needs, and appropriate behavioural interventions.

Home Care Services are provided by Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Community Health Workers (CHWs) within their respective scopes of practice and contract expectations.

Admission Criteria

Home Care Services are appropriate for injured workers who have sustained complex injuries, such as spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, neurological impairments, burns, pressure ulcers, psychological, and orthopaedic injuries.

The injured worker must demonstrate a medical and functional need for Home Care Services and must have no health concerns that would contraindicate Home Care Services.

Services must be related to the accepted, compensable claim.

Exclusion Criteria

Home Care Services are not appropriate for injured workers who:

  • are unlikely to benefit from Services (e.g., spouse is providing/can provide all the care; injured worker lives in a facility)
  • have recovered sufficiently that they can perform their own Activities of Daily Living
  • are able to use community services on a short-term basis (e.g., grocery delivery services)
  • meet the admission requirements to attend a WorkSafeBC-Sponsored Rehabilitation Service (e.g., OR1) or
  • meet their critical job demands (fit to return-to-work)
