Occupational
Rehabilitation 2 (OR 2)
Occupational Rehabilitation 2 (OR 2) is a multidisciplinary treatment program
offered by occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists,
and physicians. The team, with input from a WorkSafeBC officer, will determine the treatment components required to overcome
an injured worker's barriers in achieving return to work.

Description of services
All workers undergo an intake assessment, following which a customized
program is developed. An individual treatment plan to address the specific
needs of the worker includes:
- Activities to promote flexibility, strength and aerobic conditioning;
- Real or simulated work activities;
- Individual medical or psychological support;
- Education focused on soft tissue healing and recovery, the value of
exercise, proper posture and body mechanics and pain management strategies;
and
- Return to work planning and support, which may include a job site
visit when approved by the WorkSafeBC officer.
Admission criteria
The program is designed for workers who have:
- An injury related functional deficit or impairment
- The presence of a vocational, psychosocial and/or medical barriers
to return to work
- Been unsuccessful in returning to work or maintaining a return to
work with other treatment interventions
One of the following screening assessments or services must be completed
prior to referral to OR 2:
- Medical and Return to Work Planning (MARP) Assessment
- An exam by a WorkSafeBC medical advisor
- A file review by a WorkSafeBC medical advisor
- A Visiting Specialist Clinic (VSC) consultation recommending a multidisciplinary treatment program
- An external specialist consultation recommending a multidisciplinary treatment program
- A Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Pain Assessment (CMPA)
- Discharge recommendation from a Hand Program for multidisciplinary treatment
The program is not appropriate for the worker:
- Who meets or exceeds the physical requirements of their job and is considered
fit to return to work
- Who requires only Return to Work Support Services
- Who presents with a medical condition that would put the worker at undue
risk of harm
- Who is unlikely to benefit due to barriers beyond the scope of the program
to resolve
- Who is currently engaged in another treatment intervention for the same
injury
Length of service
Workers typically attend the program six hours per day, five days per
week for a maximum of 50 consecutive business days. This may include any
combination of treatment at a rehabilitation clinic and/or the work site.
There may be exceptions to attendance requirements based on the individual's
needs.
Service locations
OR 2 is offered at WorkSafeBC-approved
clinics throughout B.C.
Referral process
Workers are referred to the program by a WorkSafeBC officer.
