WorkSafeBC launched a new safety conference in March 2010 entitled “Putting the Roof on Injuries” with the aim of reducing incidents in construction and roofing.
Industry stakeholders attending the conference were given the opportunity to discuss challenges, learn about health and safety best practices, and participate in safety equipment demonstrations. The goal was to educate employers and workers, increase competitiveness and cost-savings, and streamline the planning process prior to construction.
Workshops included fall protection training, best practices in supervision, complex roof design, and how apprenticeship improves industry performance. Attendees were also invited to bring questions to a panel discussion.
Putting the Roof on Injuries joins a collection of WorkSafeBC initiatives exemplifying a new approach to prevention that began in 1994. Together, these initiatives have helped reduce the provincial injury rate, which dropped below 3.0 for the first time in 2008.
