Richmond, B.C., May 5, 2010 — North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH Week) is an annual call-to-action initiative focused on preventing injury and illness at work, home and in the community. All across B.C., organizations are planning health and safety related activities and events to remind us all of the importance of staying safe.
“While workplace safety is a full-time commitment every day, making the decision to participate in safety and health week gives us all the opportunity to use innovative events to raise awareness that preventing injury and illness is crucial to all of us, all the time,” said Buck Page, President of the NAOSH Week Steering Committee – BC.
Workplaces across B.C. will host events, such as:
“WorkSafeBC has been supporting the B.C. NAOSH Week committee for more than 20 years,” said Scott McCloy, WorkSafeBC Director of Communications. “We share a commitment to raising awareness about workplace and personal safety for adults and children alike.”
Workplaces that participate in activities during the week in B.C. are eligible to earn recognition and awards for their efforts. A list of organizations planning activities and events in B.C. can be found at http://www.naosh.org/english/events/bc.html.
NAOSH Week is marked by a 1997 agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico dedicating a week in the year to focus on occupational health and safety. The logo with the three participating nations symbolizes joint venture, cooperation and the commitment to the common goals shared by all occupational health and safety partners.
The Canadian launch of NAOSH Week 2010 is being held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on Monday, May 3rd with government officials, business leaders, dignitaries and occupational health and safety professionals from across the country in attendance. On the same day, the week will be launched nationally in Washington, D.C.
WorkSafeBC is an independent provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors that serves about two million workers and more than 200,000 employers. WorkSafeBC was born from the historic compromise between B.C.’s workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers and fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. WorkSafeBC is committed to safe and healthy workplaces and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits.
