The Occupational Injuries by Accident Type and Occupation tables provide statistical information on occupational injuries in British Columbia for the years 1999 to 2008. Injuries are categorized by the type of accident that led to the injury and by the occupation of the injured person. The tables include claim counts by gender and statistics on average age, complete duration, and rate of injury.
Injuries included in the report were accepted for short term disability (STD) benefits, long term disability (LTD) benefits, or survivor benefits either in the year of injury or the following year. The injuries included for year of injury 2008 are those accepted in 2008 or the first nine months of 2009. This means that the counts for injury year 2008 are very slightly less complete than those for the other years, but for all practical purposes, are on the same basis.
The term 'short term disability' (STD) has replaced 'wage loss', and 'long term disability' (LTD) has replaced 'permanent disability'. Claims not coded to accident type or occupation have been proportionately allocated to accident type and occupation categories.
Claims can be counted in different ways. The method of counting claims used in this report represents one focus and should not be compared to the counting methods used in other WorkSafeBC reports. For example, in the statistical supplement to the 2008 Annual Report, WorkSafeBC Statistics 2008, claims are counted by the year in which the first benefit was awarded, rather than by year of injury.
The injury rate calculations in Table 1C are approximate. The estimates of person years are calculated by combining information on total employment by occupation from the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey with estimates of WorkSafeBC covered person years of employment.
Tables 9A to 9J provide claim counts at the most detailed levels of occupation and type of accident. Data is shown for all occupations that had injuries accepted for short term disability benefits, long term disability benefits, and survivor benefits from 1999 to 2008. The coding on which this report is based is done by the Statistical Services department of WorkSafeBC. The code standards used for type of accident and for occupation are part of the CWIS coding standard used by all compensation boards in Canada. The code standard for type of accident is CSAZ795 and the code standard for occupation is the 1991 SOC (Standard Occupational Classification).
